REPERCUSSIONS OF BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL   Significant federal SNAP cuts and eligibility restrictions resulting from the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (H.R. 1) have removed over 3.5 million Americans from food assistance, driven by stricter work mandates, new immigrant caps, and shifting administrative costs to states.

Our client reported a notice from SNAP (Food Stamps) reducing her allocation from $190 to $24/month (this is NOT a universal amount as calculations are done individually)   However a decrease in funds will be problematic for a countless number of Philadelphians.

HOW TO Maximize SNAP with Philly Food Bucks   The Food Trust operates the Philly Food Bucks program. This initiative serves as a “market match” to stretch your food stamps when buying fresh produce:

  • 📦 Get Free Groceries via Share Food Program  – The Share Food Program is Philadelphia’s largest food distribution network and can significantly supplement your benefit: Community Pantries:  https://www.sharefoodprogram.org/our-programs/food-for-seniors.    Senior Food Box Program: If you are a qualifying senior citizen, you are entitled to a free box of nutritious shelf-stable food every month delivered or available for pickup.

🔍 Double-Check Your SNAP Math

Many people receive the $24 minimum because the state does not have an accurate record of their living costs. You can potentially increase your monthly SNAP amount by updating your case details with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services:

  • Shelter Costs: Report any increases in rent, mortgage, or property taxes.
  • Utility Allowances: Ensure you are getting credited for heating, cooling, and electric bills.
  • Medical Deductions: If you are age 60+ or receive disability benefits, you can deduct out-of-pocket medical expenses over $35/month, which drastically raises your SNAP payout.

To update your info or submit changes, log into your account online via the PA COMPASS portal or visit your local Philadelphia County Assistance Office
